Neurological assessment in Mew:
Flying back and forth several times. Landing really quite solid - at times I do see very subtle ataxia. Seems to be gripping more strongly with the left leg and much more difficult to dislodge.
Still does not walk sideways to the right well as compared to the left. I am not sure how readily this species does this normally, but there is assymmetry.
When the bird finally grounded he still fell to one side or another - however I suspect some of this is normal owl behavior. Most notably he did talon my gloves twice and held on quite well with BOTH feet.
He did fall off the low perch when I tried to place him on it. This was close to the end of the session, so I am not sure how much was stress.
Will re-evaluate in 2 weeks. Dr Gardner

Bird was flying perch to perch well. Bird would fly and would not land on the perch which caused bird to fly to other perch instead (original perch). This behavior happened around 3 times. Water was changed.

VET NOTES
Assessed in Mew again this week. Immediately noted that he flew more readily and confidently, and less likely to go to ground. Did try to talon a bit with the RIGHT foot. Left foot much less eager to move once perched, and if harrassed would just grip on for dear life with that foot. When we handled him he did grab onto a towel with both feet but grip seemed weak. When forced to walk sideways on perch walked to the left more readily, when forced to walk to the right reluctant to let go with left foot.
When landing he still seems ataxic, but much less supporting/ balancing with wings and catches himself, turns more easily. Still very hard to assess on the ground.
I assessed the radiographs done last week - I do not see any areas of concern on the spine.
He does continue to show continued improvement, so I am hoping that part of his dysfunction is just weakness and that our exercise is helping him.
Continue exercise as before. Will recheck 4/26.
Did feather check - tail is a mess but wings fine.

Started flying when I entered and did a full lap. Dipped low on the 6th pass and wouldnt fly again. After a couple minutes I walked back in to enclosure and the bird flew 2 more times. Did not seem to have an issue landing and was able to turn around on the perch each time.

Showed a little improvement from last week - flew a few more times for us, quicker to land and place feet although still obviously wobbly. Still not really trying to reach out with talons. Did fly fairly well when tossed, and stepped up backwards onto a stick with a lot of coaxing.
I would like to give at least one more week, but my thought is that we need to recheck radiographs. Sometimes birds with spinal fractures develop callous after some time that is more readily apparent. Will put for tomorrow - please send radiographs to Dr G to look at. Dr Gardner

Flew back and forth a couple of times then went to ground. Behaved similarly as last week, although a little quicker to get up and ambulate a few steps. Still pretty ataxic in legs, and most notably, does not really attempt to reach out and talon or put his feet on the perches at all when moved towards them. Doesn't grab well with talons. My suspicions is that this is an issue w/ conscious proprioception.
There is limited improvement from last week and for this reason we opted to continue. Recheck 4/12. Dr Gardner

VET NOTES
Went out to evaluate neurologically. He was on the ground, looked as though mantling but when harrassed fell over to the left, and back on rear end. Uses legs very abnormally - does not reach out to foot but does grip hard if a gloved finger is placed in his foot between talons. If you really hassle him he can get up and take a few high running steps, and at times he can place his feets but overall just is very wobbly.
I am not surprised that he can fly - my suspicion is that there is an injury below the level of the thoracic spine, so not effecting the wings.
We decided to move to another enclosure and give more time, but prognosis is very guarded.
Exercise daily 4-6 times back and forth. Per Milan he does land and perch, so I think going from perch to perch is the best PT we can do.
Continue Meloxicam. Will recheck 4/06. Dr Gardner

Veterinary Exam (Visual) 3/20/24:

Went to bird enclosure to examine. Owl was perching well and normally. Foot and toe placement for both feet were normal. Reactive behavior was normal.

It was decided to not handle this bird due to improved use and function of legs and feet.

Medicated chick was placed on perch and paper was changed.

A pellet was removed from the cage.

This is my first time seeing this bird. He was on his perch but apperaed to be leaning, according to Ally. We brought him in and put him on the ground in the treatment room.
He is definitely not using legs normally. Quite ataxic and wobbly. Falls back on his rear end with wings outspread and leans to left. When stimulated is able to walk unstably several steps.
Did some "walking" PT, encouraging and supporting his body with gloved hand (see video). Also did some perching PT, grabbing on a perch without a wall to lean on, and moving around to encourage him to grip and hold his balance.
My suspicion for this bird is that there is some neurological/ spinal trauma that is resolving but how much it will resolve is the question.
Needs to be evaluated 1-2 x a week for progress. If plateauing a decision needs to be made.
Continue walking and perching PT Q 2-3 days. Continue Meloxicam.
To me OD looks fairly normal, I will mark as resolved. Dr Gardner

Note use of legs

BARP. Bullied off perch to watch leg usage. Started knuckling once on the floor. Did PT: Bird resisted to bicycle kicks, mostly on R leg. Didn't move toes much, knuckled them a few times. NOLO. Changed papers.

NOLO, perched with back facing feeder. clacked beak and hissed when feeder opened door.
draped wing to appear bigger. alert to feeder's presence, shuffled feet after feeder dropped food but didnt really move away, moving feet seemed hard.

Bird was standing right next to door kind of leaning on wall. Bird did not appear to be able to stand without support. Grabbed to remove band and for leg PT. When placing back in condo bird leaned against perch

PT: 15x bicycles on each leg. Both were grabbing and kicking on their own but L leg was weaker.

Bird was leaning on side of kennel not standing. When in hand bird was able to kick and clench feet. Placed under 4% ISO and oxygen via mask for radiographs. After first image was taken noticed bird was not breathing so immediatly turned off ISO and increased oxygen. Heart was beating slow and weak. Bird began very shallow breaths. It took several minutes before the bird began to take steady deep breathes and for the heart rate to increase. Once bird was breathing on its own and heart rate evened out we removed the cone and allowed bird to get fully awake and alert before giving meds and placing back in box.
Bird was then very clacky and bitey. Placed bird in kennel and made no attempt to stand but did sit on hocks.

Am I standing/using legs? Was sitting on donut. Uses legs fine while grabbed. Palpated no issues in legs or pelvis. Abdomen is very soft and a little bloated. After treatment was wobbly and would not stand upright. Propped with 1/2 donut.

History: Bird was found laying under a tree near a road soaking wet and not moving. Finder placed bird in a box and transported to us.

Exam notes:
Bird was laying in box with eyes open but not really responsive. The bird was wet over the entire body but mainly the lower half. The feathers were matted with mud and debris like leaves and twigs. The body was also cold. Bird was placed on a heated rice bag covered by a towel. Throughout exam bird became more responsive. No fractures were felt while palpating the body and no wounds were found. Both legs had tendon reflex and would clench when messed with. Both were weak and slow to react. The left foot was weaker then the right. No bruising was seen around the abdomen or spine. Some scarring was present in the right eye with some mild floating debris.

Using the blow dryer on low and using a towel, we started to get the bird dry and remove some mud. Could not be fully dried but made it so bird was not left cold and soaked.

Placed bird in a kennel in a donut with a heating pad under the kennel.

Plan:
Watch for more use of legs over the next three days. Possibly give bath. Continue fluids until reliably eating. Collect fecal sample to check for parasites and get radiographs to check for fractures
